Food Sense Recipes and Healthy Eating Ideas

Ideas for Making Lunches Portable
– Pack frozen fruit and cottage cheese separately. Mix at lunch when fruit has defrosted.
– Freeze burritos individually.
– Keep boxed soup at work.
– Wraps.
– Deconstructed sandwiches.

Ideas for Making Quick Meals
– Use leftovers. Save time: cook once, eat twice!
– Freeze single servings of dough for roti, dinner buns, or pizzas.
– You may be able to buy pre-made dough from a pizza place, eg: Flying Wedge.
– Use weekends for prep work. Cut veggies, wash fruit, etc. to grab and go; Bake muffins, slow-cook chili, etc. to freeze for the week.
– Put your lunch together the evening before.
– Use the slow-cooker so dinner is ready when you get home.

Favourite Tools in the Kitchen
– George Foreman grill cooks quickly and cleans easily.
– Convection oven for faster baking.
– A very sharp knife makes prep quicker and easier.
– Magic Bullet blends or chops foods easily, and the containers are portable and dishwasher safe.

Ways to Save Money
– Visit No Frills for big sales.
– Shopper’s Drug Mart and London Drugs often have good sales on packaged food products and other household goods eg: soap, TP, paper towels, etc.
– Buy meat in bulk at Costco and freeze separately.
– Farmer’s Markets sell local produce for good prices. Eg: A&L near the City Hall Canada Line Stn, Kin’s in the City Square Mall, and Young Brothers on Broadway @ Balaclava.

Places to Eat Around VGH
– Everybody Loves Veggies at City Square Mall.
– Salad Loop at the Diamond Centre.
– The salad bar at Sassafras is reasonably priced.
– Cafe Ami makes homemade soups. Also, you can save money on coffee by buying their prepaid coffee cards.
– Minato Sushi near Broadway and Oak.

Also note:
– If you’re going to LGH, there are a number of good restaurants on Lonsdale.
– If you’re headed to RCH, the cafeteria has fresh soup and a great salad bar.

Tasty Combinations
– Ricotta cheese + bacon + chicken thighs
– Diced tomatoes + 2 tbsp chili powder + 2 tbsp cumin + *your fave ingredients*
– Flaked chicken/turkey + tzatziki + sandwich bread
– Baked meat + 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar + 1 tbsp soy sauce + 1 tbsp maple syrup
